Has anyone used one of the CAT spray guns? USA made. Jaguar model --Claim to be better than the Sata 2000 with a life time guarantee. Maybe this is another alternative to the Sata guns.

I've got the first 29 PSIG Jaguar ever made. The one I've got is red and their new color for this gun is blue I believe. It's a good gun copied after the Binks M1G. The guys that founded CAT were formerly with Binks and lost their jobs when IWT took over Binks several years ago now. This explains why their guns look like Binks guns. They probably stole the blueprints for them as the walked out the door. One thiing about it is that it has an extremely wide fan which appeals to some people. To me it's not a big deal but the fan is about as wide as the SATA Nr2000 which is pretty wide.

All in all not bad but I like the DeVilbiss PLUS better.

Dennis,
Larry Lyles uses the M1G on his Paint vid. He seems very keen on the gun and I assume he knows how to use it as he has had it a long time and uses it frequently. I was quite shocked at the amount of peel he got on that video and was wondering if the gun is as poor a topcoat gun as it seems.
Any opinion?
Ken

I don't consider it to be inferior to other HVLP guns which my particular model happens to be. It's as good as the Nr2000's and DeVilbiss GTI's I've got but not in a class with the compliant guns like the PLUS, the Titanium Compliant or the RP. I don't think there is an LVLP or HVLP gun that is peel free. Even my LPH400-LV has some and it's the best of the low pressure lot. Using the Schmidt invented Peel-O-Meter the best HVLP guns only make it to about P1200 whereas the compliant guns can get up there to P2000 or P2500.

The definition of the Peel-O-Meter was published on the old forum and I don't know if Len can retrieve it. In brief it's the lowest grit of sandpaper you can get away with for color sanding without taking the rest of your life doing it. With any HVLP I've found that I've got to start with P1200. With lesser quality HVLP guns P800 isn't out of the question. With the best of the compliant guns I've already gotten away with P2500. Not yet made it to the point where I can start with Trizact (P3000) but there is always hope.

Kenc,

I had no idea as to who Larry Lyles was until I got my new copy of Auto Restorer. The reason his peel is so bad is that he's running his guns, both the Binks and the PLUS, at way too low of a pressure. DeVilbiss recommends 45 PSIG on the Plus for the clear he's using on their website. He's running at 28 which isn't enough. He's equally low on the Binks M1G.

Good for transfer efficiency and low overspray not so good for peel.

On the Binks he has mentioned multiple times in print and video to run it at 22psi. Sounds way low to me, but I don't know the M1G.

I use the Binks M1-G. Works great with base coats. But like someone else said I usually have some Orange Peel. So I have perfected my color sanding. lol. I am thinking of buying the Sharpe Titanium combo set with the complaint maybe I will get less peel if I switch clear guns. Plus the binks has the 1.4 maybe the 1.3 is better for clear. What do yall think?

Dennis, on a recent post you said the DV recommends 45 lbs on the plus for clear . On mine I,m using a 1.2 tip at 45 pound how many turns do you back out the fluid needle for that set up.and what pressure and how many turns out for base? as to the not selling Sata on the net maybe this is a good thing I bought an RP about a year ago and I couldn,t see it did a bit better than the Plus, went to buy a 1.2 set up for it and when they priced it I said this is it sold it to a friend. People here are saying good things about the Iwata and the new dura-block. TIA Vipond

All the settings for the PLUS for each of the manufacturer's paints are provided on DeVilbiss.com. I always run the gun wide open unless I'm trying to spray a spot by using a collapsed fan. What I mean by wide open is to open the fluid adjustment all the way and then pull back the trigger. While the trigger is in this position start turning the fluid adjustment knob in until you begin to feel it push the needle forward at this point you are wide open. I also run the fan wide open as well. If you collapse the fan then you need to decrease the amount of fluid as well but with wide open fan you should also have wide open fluid.
