I use a cheap gun from Harbor Freight for priming.
Does great with sealing primers, but the high-builds I am having problems with. The finished piece looks lumpy.... am I using the wrong size tip, or some other problem?
If the problem is the tip, is there a source for other tips? (The local Harbor Frieght store is no help).
Don from the sound of your problem I think that your tip size
may be too small for that gun. For High Build primers you would
need anywhere from a 1.8mm to 2.0mm tip.
When you spray the primer, you might try thin it or reduce it
first and see how that goes.
Without knowing the tip size/air pressure & primer your using
its difficult to help !
thanks .. ><

I have a el cheapo 1.7 hvlp gun that i spray primer with and I had trouble with it coming out lumpy and grainy. I messed with the airpressure and found that if Increase the presure for 20 to 30 it layed down alot smoother. I dont know what Kind of gun you have but thats what i did.

the harbor freight guns have a 1.4tip and are not meant for spraying anykind of primer you can spray sealer with it but thats about it they dont make any replacement parts or different size tips for those guns they are jus tthrow away guns i used several when they break they go in the trash they do work for bases pretty good though just go to harbor freight and get one of there cheap siphon feed conventional guns with a big ass tip on it for your primer gun

Don, harbor freight sells other tips for your gun and they are reasonably priced. What size tip does your gun have now ? I suggest buying a tip size from around 1.7 - 2.0 for high build primers. Something that nobody else mentioned is that high build primer does not go on like glass, sometimes there is relatively heavy orange peel. Its not a big deal because the primer has to be sanded anyway. You can get the primer to lay down flatter by adding reducer but that has a direct effect on the amount of primer shrinkage you get. I never use more than about 5% reducer added for that reason.
This is probably not your problem but it needs to be addressed anyway - make sure the air vent in the paint cup is open and not plugged up. If the air vent hole is plugged up it will cause the materials in the gun to come out very dry and grainy. Also make sure the fluid tip and air cap are free from paint/primer buildup. That can cause dry spray also.

There was a similar discussion a couple months back about replacement tips for the HF gravity feed guns. You can call HFmain customer support but the outlet stores should be able to get tips in different sizes.
