just took the advice on which is better sata or plus. Wanted the best gun so I just purchased the w400 iwata 142g. Just wondering what the settings are on air pressure. It gave me a range of 29 psi to 43 psi. It has the lv2 air cap and 1.4. Does anyone know the correct setting. Did a pre-spray on it with just some thinner ,sprays even smoother than the plus and the fan pattern must be at least 12 inches. Got a great deal on it for 298 plus 8 for shipping:) .
How can you tell it's spraying smoother if you're only spraying thinner.
The inlet pressure on an older conventional gun like the W400 isn't as critical as it is on HVLP or compliant gun. I would probably shoot it around 30 to 35 PSI inlet pressure but it's probably isn't critical to measure it at the gun. I would probably set the wall regulator at 45 PSI and start spraying without using an inlet regulator.
The older conventional guns atomize real well but generate more runs and dry spots than the newer technology and usually generate a lot more overspray. About 7 years ago I used a W-400 for about a year and opted to go with the LPH-400. A year later, after trying the Sata Jet 2000, I went with the Sata for several years and then to the Plus and now to the Dura-Block gun. The W-400 is an excellent gun but guns (even Iwatas) have come a long way since they were popular.
I'm sure you'll be happy with it if you can master getting a consistent paint application.
Never heard anything but good things about the Plus - kind of surprised that someone would be unhappy enough with one to replace it with a W400.
Is the W400 conventional or compliant?

I guess I cannot tell yet ,but it does have a smoother action and wider fan than my plus. I may still get the sata gun. I like the compliants more because I like them better than the hvlp. I may try your dura block gun,but only the cheaper version right now. Thanks for your input len, I appreciate all replies on this board, there is reallly a wealth of knowledge shared here.:)

I am VERY happy with my plus gun:D , I just wanted to try something different. I will continue to use both. I think the w400 is compliant since it is 11.5 lbs at air cap where it should be 10. Don't get me wrong ,I will never stop using my plus gun, just would like to see if I liked something better. Thats all I have ever sprayed with is devillbiss. They are my favorite and probably will continue to be;)

i think you will be happy with the w400. i have one myself, but i havent been able to use it yet as i am finishing building my shop. i did a lot of research and decided to get a lph400 for bases and a w400 for clears. i have read that it lays clears down like glass. you can get some good info at the aset message board: http://www.asetusa.com/phpBB2/index.php
it is the iwata message board with Hub. you can ask him any questions about your iwata.

The best things I found about the W-400 was it's light weight and ease of cleaning. Air cap pressure will vary depending on inlet pressure.

If as many guns that I have heard laid clear down like glass really did just that. Len wouldn't sell any buffing supplies. Sort of like Big Foot I would have to see it. The reason glass is really flat. Mooch

just an expression mooch. maybe it wouldve been better if people would say it laid clear down with very little orange peel compared to hvlps/lvlps.;)

the iwata w400 is a very good gun for clears in my opinion its the closest to sata rp there is only thing is it doesnt feel quite as durable it may be as durable just doesnt feel like it i bought the 7003gms off len for bases and it does a good job mooch so i would recomend it for the price and it has a pretty decent fan size for the price as well but i do love the big fans like the 400 and the rp makes things alot faster

pls correct this for me... am i right or wrong
iwata 400 is conventianal gun
iwata 400 lv is compliant gun
and iwata lph400 lv is hvlp lph400 lvb base coat purple cap
thank you:confused:
The W-400 is conventional the LPH-400 is HVLP and the LV and LVB are variations/improvements/updates.

w400 is conventional gun
w400lv compliant gun
and lph400lv hvlp or lvlp gun :p
The fan width is Larger on the Iwata w400 and lph-400 lv than the Plus
for a given input air pressure. I have a plus gun here, Its a excellent gun
for the price. Devilbiss did a really good job on it. But its not in the same league as the Iwatas IMHO.
The LPH-400-LV is a hvlp variant of the w400. The hvlp thing is somewhat
confusing in that it dictates 10psi at the cap.. So I guess if you exceed 10psi
at the cap does it qualify as a compliant gun... humm anyway enough of the rant.
You did good getting the W400 for that price ! Congrats, PM Me if more are available.
w400 is conventional gun = Yes
w400lv compliant gun = Yes
and lph400lv hvlp or lvlp gun = Yes
Thanks X711
I would probably agree that the Iwata may be a little better gun than the Iwata but it's the old YGWYPF thing again since the Iwatas are about $150 more the the comparable DeVilbiss gun. Actually I would say the same about a comparison between the Iwatas and the Satas but the Satas cost about $150 more than the Iwatas.
It should also be noted that a "compliant" gun is really still a conventional gun that transfers 65% (or more) of the material to the surface but still has most of the pros and cons of a conventional gun.

Here's my 2 cents worth on these spray guns.... I paint professionally in a collision repair shop (22+ yrs.). I'll spray 3-5 jobs a day depending on the size. We use Sikkens ABP base with Lesonal undercoats and clears. I have a Devil. Plus that I used as my clear gun for 1 1/2 yrs. (it replaced my Sata jet90). A year ago I tried a Sata RP w/1.4, like it enough to buy it and use as my clear gun for this past year. I've owned a Iwata LPH400lv w/1.3 tip for a year or so, and it really didn't impress me too much for base or clear. A month ago I demo an Iwata LPH400LV w/1.4 and instantly fell in love with it. Huge difference between the 1.3 & 1.4!!! Totally different guns. I liked it so much I now own 2, one with the LVB cap for base and one with the standard LV4 cap for clear (my jobber swapped me his 1.4 for my 1.3). I've always preferred to spray at lower psi and the LPH400 with a 1.4 is perfect for me and the products we use. It works so much better for me that I sold the Sata RP this past week. I still have my Plus gun and use it for single-stages. All these guns work good and are well built but the Iwatas really fit my style of spraying best. For a guy that likes to spray with higher air pressure (35-45 psi) the Plus, W400 or a RP would be a better choice. I think the days of blasting on the materials at 50+ lbs are gone but there's still guys out there that prefer to bump the psi way up. BTW Len, nice forum you have here! Cully
